Getting Plugged In

Welcome to the Better Business Brief, where I share takeaways from:

  • running a business I’m building to sell for millions
  • my consulting with business owners building to sell for millions
  • tips and tricks you can use to do the same

I went out and interviewed business owners in my local community last week. I went door to door, meeting and greeting business owners who had brick and mortar locations. Mostly family-owned local businesses.

I learned a couple of lessons doing this. I’ll share them with you in this edition…

So today, in less than 5 minutes, I’ll give you:

🧘 The key to staying sane as a business owner

🏥 A spin on the usual healthcare model

💡 Crafty ways to get more customers in the door

Business owners have to stick together. A rising tide lifts all boats.

When I interviewed these business owners, the thing that the successful ones had in common that stood out to me was that they were connected. They were friends with lots of other business owners.

I was stunned at how once I started meeting some of them, I ended up getting referred to more and more of them. They told me that they get advice from each other, share success stories with each other, and share struggles with each other.

This helps them stay on track with what they are doing when they work on growing their business. Rather than staying in isolation, they get feedback for their ideas and get help and direction from others.

A client of mine recently told me she had been feeling pretty isolated in her efforts to grow her business, and beginning to get back into networking groups and support groups with other business owners has been the game changer for her.

This is something I’m internalizing and working on doing better with. Often times, we business owners feel pride in being able to do everything on our own, but the fact is that’s just not realistic. It’s so much better to get vulnerable and get help for things when you need it. That’s they key to sustainable growth.

3 Ways I see business owners having success in staying connected:

  1. Attending local networking events - Chambers of commerce, clubs, and others
  2. Getting plugged into the right Facebook groups - there is a group for pretty much every industry where you can share stuff with others in the space
  3. Hosting events - if you have a location to use, you can host an event for other business owners and bring them to you

Another lesson I learned - don’t be afraid to shake up the usual model.

I met three particularly notable women business owners in my community that had done a great job putting a spin of some kind on the usual model in their industry.

Because of these unconventional tactics, they are having unconventional success. I’ll share a little…

Ari

Ari owns and operates a primary care facility. The usual method of running one of these is to take patients through insurance, and try to get as many through the door, as quickly as possible.

She shared with me that, having come from a career in healthcare before starting her business, this was just not leading to great outcomes and patient care.

Rather than do this, she decided to create a monthly retainer for care for her clients. They pay a monthly fee for as much care as they need, and she sees a smaller amount of clients, but only those who really value extra care and have the money to spend on it. She shared that this has allowed her to really focus on patient care in a much better way and also have a better quality of life in running her practice.

Jenna and Shannon

These two sisters run a brick and mortar retail shop that is like if a Pinterest page was a store. It is full of crafty decorations that help women decorate their homes the way they want.

Unlike many shops like this, they actually started entirely online. They created a lifestyle brand based on the way they were designing their own spaces and based around the things they liked. They would sell their products online to those who were following along.

Eventually, they wanted to bridge the gap and develop into their local community more. They opened the shop and began leading with hosting community events. They host a book club and various craft-building workshops which all help bring in new customers to their store.

Often times, if we are discerning, our previous experiences shed light on opportunities to bring something new and innovative to an existing industry.

Some of the best businesses disrupt the usual. So think outside the box. Get creative. Play on your strengths.

If you’re feeling alone in your journey, it’s time to find some people to bring along with you. Get out there and find them.

Be great. Keeping growing and aspiring. And as always: I hope you got something from this.

If you did, share it with a friend who may too, as this is the best way for me to grow it and make this better.

They can even sign up here :)

Happy value-building to all of you!

See you next time for Better Business Brief,

-Brody
