Finding Balance in Growth

What’s up bosses,

Welcome to the Better Business Brief, where I share takeaways from:

  • running a business I’m building to sell for millions
  • my consulting with business owners building to sell for millions
  • tips and tricks you can use to do the same

As you grow, you will inevitably encounter problems. Every stage of growth brings with it growth problems that must be solved. This has been on my mind as I work through some of my own growth problems. I wanna get raw in this one and share those growth problems and what I’ve been learning from them…

So today, in less than 5 minutes, I’ll give you:

🔓 An unlock for lead generation

🕴️ A lesson learned in leadership

🤝 An unexpected dream collab

Growth problems… let’s talk about them.

As business owners or entrepreneurs, we have a limited amount of hours in the day. That means that as you grow, you must deal with tradeoffs.

In my case, with my business, it looks like this:

At the beginning, I focused all of my efforts at first on finding clients. As I got clients, I had less time to find more because I had to spend more time managing the clients I now had.

What did I learn about myself through this?

I enjoy the actual client work WAY more than the efforts of going out and finding new clients. It’s what I initially got into the business to do. This lead me to getting help with the finding clients.

On this journey, I recently discovered something pretty cool that I didn’t know about before. There are TONS of companies out there that are very established and can help you find new customers for a price. If you find the right one for you, you can actually figure out how to acquire a new customer for a reliable price. And if that price is a good bit less than the money you make from that customer, then you have a way to grow reliably.

Not everyone will be the same as me. For some people, the thrill is in the hunt. They want to be out there closing sales all the time and searching for new customers. While I enjoy this too, I enjoy working with my clients way more. It’s very fulfilling for me. So finding a company to generate appointments with good fit customers made a lot of sense for me.

My advice for anyone experiencing growth problems?

Be honest about what you’re good at and what you enjoy the most. Do more of that and less of the things you don’t like doing. Outsource. But be smart. Shop around for the right option. Do it cost-effectively. Our strategy was to get on calls with about 6 different options of companies to figure out which was best for us.

At the end of last year, I brought on a few people into my company to start helping me expand beyond myself.

The awesome part about this is that it brought a lot of new ideas to the table. The tough part is that it brought a lot of new ideas to the table. As a naturally very agreeable person, one of the big growth challenges I have faced is that in the face of bringing on great people, I have struggled to keep my direction strong.

Great people often have strong will, and strong will can pull you in new directions if you aren’t careful.

The lesson I’ve learned through this? You need to bring on good, strong-willed people to grow, but even more important is that you stick to your value and direction as you bring them on. Hear and listen to all ideas as a leader, but defer to the mission you’ve set. Keep yourself focused on the vision you have. And stick to the values that define you.

One of my dream collabs happened recently…

I’m a huge fan of both Codie Sanchez and Dan Martell, and they recently released a video that was about an hour of candid, unedited conversation in front of an audience between the two of them.

They discussed growing a company as two people who both manage portfolios of fast growth companies and have bought and sold many companies over their careers.

I wanted to share this one because it relates into what I’m discussing here. These are two grade A entrepreneurs sharing a lot of the frameworks and tips that have brought them success along their journey. I highly recommend checking it out. Lots of great gems. Watch it here.
