Vision & Team Building

Hey studs,

Welcome to the Better Business Brief, where I share takeaways from:

  • running a business I’m building to sell for millions
  • my consulting with business owners building to sell for millions
  • tips and tricks you can use to do the same

I’ve been doing some soul searching lately. Nothing crazy. I just decided to look internally a little more to get a better idea of what my vision is. At the same time, I’m wrapping up my MBA this month, and the last class I’m in is all about Leadership and finding out what the personality traits you have that lend themselves to being a better leader are. I wanted to share some of my findings..

So today, in less than 5 minutes, I’ll give you:

👁️ The Vision-Strengthening Exercise You Need

3️⃣ The Top 3 Takeaways for My Vision

🤯 The Simple Truth about Growing Fast as a Leader

I just read Patrick Bet-David’s ‘Your Next Five Moves’ and wow, was. It one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. He is truly a visionary thought leader in the world of entrepreneurship and I recommend reading this to anyone that is an entrepreneur. At the beginning of the book, he leads you to a vision-strengthening exercise where you take yourself into private, with no distractions, and really get to know yourself. You go through a deep questionnaire and spend time really working through the answers.

So I took a hike this weekend, about an hour out into a trail, sat down in the woods with no one around, and went through it. It was powerful. It was emotional. It was definitely empowering. Here’s the link if you want to try it:

My top 3 takeaways at the end?

  1. I don’t want lazy or unmotivated people around me
  2. I want to grow somehow every single day
  3. I reject anyone’s expectations they have of me that aren’t aligned with what my goals are

Sounds simple, but the path to getting there for me was what really helped it all sink in. Get to know yourself like this. Odds are, you don’t know yourself as well as you think you do, and that there are things to discover that will lead to you more effectively navigating the path towards your goals.

This is one of the last few newsletters of mine you’ll read where the letters MBA aren’t on my LinkedIn profile. I’ve been working on getting it the last 2 years, and I graduate in a couple of weeks now. The last class I am taking is on Leadership - a topic I’m quite passionate about.

The big takeaway I’ve had so far is that there is one really great way to accelerate your leadership development and accomplish what you want a lot faster:

Lean into your strengths and focus almost all of your energy on developing those. The premise here is that if you focus on this, you’ll enjoy your self development more and also get way bigger returns. Then you can use some of your strengths to help lead people that cover your weaknesses.

I took a personality test called the Clifton Gallup Strengths Finder test to hone in on what my top 5 strengths are, and it’s helped me decide how I want to develop and use them.

For reference, I found out my top 5 strengths are…

  1. Learner: I have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. The process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites me
  2. Competition: I measure my progress against the performance of others. I strive to win first place and revel in contests.
  3. Achiever: I work hard and possess a great deal of stamina. I take immense satisfaction in being busy and productive.
  4. Communication: I generally find it easy to put my thoughts into words. I am a good conversationalist and presenter.
  5. Individualization: I am intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. I have a gift for figuring out how different people can work together productively.

Here’s how I can then plan to use those to grow my leadership going forward:

  1. I can continue consuming lots of knowledge on leadership, finding better tactics and approaches all the time
  2. I can encourage my people to compete and will enjoy finding little competitions to invent or bring us towards a goal
  3. I can get a lot of output out of myself and general encourage others to want to work hard by my example
  4. I can effectively get my ideas across to my people and my team so that we move towards a common goal
  5. I can build teams effectively and understand how to lead each individual the way they want to be led

What can you take away here? Take inventory of your strengths, so you can learn to lean in on them. Then develop them in a way that allows you to lead others to follow you. Recruit people to lead that help you cover your weaknesses so you can put all your energy on developing your strengths.

This one was simple. Get to know yourself. Use that knowledge more effectively. Ultimately, a huge part of building a successful business hinges on your vision and your ability to build a team around it. So figure out what that vision is and then figure out what your super powers are that will allow you to build around it. The sooner you find these, the sooner you’ll thank me.

Be great. Keeping growing and aspiring. And as always: I hope you got something from this.

If you did, share it with a friend who may too, as this is the best way for me to grow it and make this better.

They can even sign up here :)

Happy value-building to all of you!
