Process Improvement

Welcome to the Better Business Brief, where I share takeaways from:

  • running a business I’m building to sell for millions
  • my consulting with business owners building to sell for millions
  • tips and tricks you can use to do the same

I’ve been going deep on process improvement lately. Mental processes and business processes that allow for more growth. And I'm learning a lot.

So today, in less than 5 minutes, I’ll give you:

đź’¦ What pressure washing taught me about leadership

🧠 A licensing model that could change your game

I went to a trade show last week to meet and greet with some business owners in the home services space. Specifically, it was a bunch of owners dominating things in the pressure washing space. This is an area we’re working on growing into more as a company.

While I was mostly there to network, I ended up hearing something that taught me a major lesson.

One of the speakers was a guy Jon, who’d sold a couple of companies before, all for great gains. He told me that like most business owners start out, he was a bit of a control freak, and found himself getting caught up working in the weeds of the business.

Before he could pull himself out of this, he was having a really tough time growing his business. In other words, he was acting as a technician and not a CEO. He went on to tell me that once he switched his mindset to acting as a CEO, he saw MAJOR success.

So the lesson I learned is to pull yourself out of the weeds. Even if you enjoy technician activities, you aren’t doing right by your company if you aren’t acting with a CEO mindset.

If you improve your process, you improve your results.

Watch my quick Q&A with Jon here to see what the 3 biggest things that allowed him to sell his businesses were.

A couple of clients of mine have a really cool business model -

They have an event services business that they’ve been running for well over a decade.

Over that time, they grew it like this:

  1. Develop the business in one city through trial and error
  2. Expand into a second city doing the same things that worked
  3. License the business model to other people wanting to do the same thing
  4. Teach new licensees how to grow right
  5. Run bookkeeping services for licensees and collect a revenue share

New licensees get to take advantage of an already established brand name and the built-in bookkeeping.

The owners get to profit for every new licensee they add, and make more the more that the licensees grow and expand their territory.

There’s 2 reasons I share this:

  1. This is a great model to grow a business. It’s a lot easier to package up something that works and teach others to do it than to try to expand to a whole new city yourself and spread yourself that thin. If you have proven business tactics and processes, you can expand every time you identify a good new partner to license to. You both benefit because you save them the work of figuring out a new business while profiting from their work growing their location.
  2. What we’re working on building out to expand this is applicable to any business - I have them creating training videos walking through the outreach tactics that allow them to find new business. What this does is creates a library of process for any new employees they bring on, but also for any new licensees. This way, growth is streamlined and easy. These are the types of things that build long term value into a business but also give it the proper structure to be able to grow.

If you’re running an established business, could you be growing with something like this?

If you think this could be a route forward for you, I’d love to discuss with you what that looks like in practice. Grab some time here and we can talk about how you might be able to expand your business by licensing your model.

Growth only comes through continual process improvement. If what you’ve been doing hasn’t been working, it’s time to find a new process that does.

Be great. Keeping growing and aspiring. And as always: I hope you got something from this.

If you did, share it with a friend who may too, as this is the best way for me to grow it and make this better.

They can even sign up here :)

Happy value-building to all of you!

See you next time for Better Business Brief,

-Brody
